When you are working hard to make your home look just the way you want it you need good resources.
Michael Mattley, our Managing Partner will be pleased to answer your questions and be happy to advise you, if you wish, so that you can make the right choice for your needs.
Sometimes though, what you are looking for is not available "off the shelf", this is where our Custom Made Products service comes into it's own. We can, in many instances, make the door or gate you need. Handmade by our artisan joiner Lance Jaques you can be assured of a first class job and a high quality product. So if you do need a special sized door, a stable door or a gate, get in touch, we can probably make it for you.
Our Cottage Doors are hand made in the traditional way. The timber is individually selected and carefully laid out with the heart sides of the boards set in opposing directions. This ensures that any expansion or contraction in the board is countered by the adjoining board moving in the opposite direction thereby eliminating distortions. The boards are planed, rebated and moulded with bead & butt design ready to accept the Ledges and Braces. The curved braces which can be seen in two of the images below are called "OGee Braces" They are first cut out with a band saw then finely shaped with a spoke shave and wood rasp. Final finishing with several grades of sandpaper give the super smooth surface which is their hallmark. The doors are assembled using traditional rose headed nails which are clenched over at the back as was the custom in times past. Slotted GKN self colour screws are added for extra stability. The doors are finished off by treating them with an ageing solution which helps the patina.
Our workshop and showrooms are located just a few miles from the site of the famous "Battle of Bosworth" which took place on 22nd August 1485 so we have named the two styles of cottage door we make as "The Bosworth" and "The Richard". The Bosworth Door as can be seen below has three ledges and two OGee curved braces. The Richard, also pictured below has four ledges which is the accepted way of construction if there are no braces and the boards are random widths.
These Cottage Doors can be made to accommodate odd sized openings where the height may be somewhat lower than normal or the width somewhat wider as is often the case in old cottages or barn conversions. Because of the need for wider jambs on the frames to accommodate "Tee Hinges" we can also custom make frames to match - see below.
Here are examples of a Bosworth and a Richard Cottage Door that Lance made (and some nice pictures of Lance himself). Click the images for a larger picture.
